The story of the IWC Portugieser began in the late 1930s with two Portuguese businessmen who approached IWC with a special request. They wanted wristwatches with the precision of marine chronometers, as accurate timekeeping was crucial for navigation and maritime activities. To fulfil the request of the Portuguese businessmen, IWC had to create a timepiece that featured a large and highly precise movement with nautical roots—the Portuguese collection. Eventually rechristened as ‘Portugieser’, this line has evolved and expanded with the IWC Portugeiser Yacht Club, maintaining its nautical roots. Celebrating the brand’s commitment to the evolution and expansion of their nautical offerings is the IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide, featuring an unprecedented complication—a tide indication.
The Yacht Club Fuses Tradition And Technology
The IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide exudes timeless elegance with a 44mm case in 18-karat 5N gold, set with a luxurious blue dial, featuring a sunray-brushed base. The large, 18-karat gold appliques, classic leaf-shaped Portugeiser, hands filled with lume, and the railroad minute track running around ensure ease of reading the watch even in challenging lighting conditions. Lending balance to the design is the date window at three o’clock. All of this and more add an unparalleled visual dimension to the watch.
The novel nautical indications, such as the moon phase and tide display sub-dials at 12 and six o’clock enhance the display, setting it apart from mainstream timepieces. The double moon phase display offers spring and neap tides, which allows the wearer to learn about the strength of the current tides. The newly developed tide display at six o’clock indicates the arrival of the next high and low tide for specific locations. This enables sailors and watersport enthusiasts to plan their activities with precision. Additionally, the moon phase complication further complements the tide indicator, reflecting the lunar influence on the tides.
Within The Yacht Club
The timekeeping and complications are driven by the IWC-manufactured 82835 calibre. This movement incorporates precision engineering and craftsmanship, providing reliable timekeeping and impressive functionality. At the heart of the watch is a perpetual moon phase complication, which accurately tracks and displays the moon’s phases throughout its 29.5-day cycle, adding a touch of celestial allure to the watch. Moreover, the tide indicator is a true engineering marvel. It relies on a complex system that takes into account the gravitational forces of the moon and sun on the Earth’s oceans.
This robust, automatic movement is fitted with ceramic components and features a Pellaton winding system. The movement’s 60-hour power reserve ensures that the watch will continue to function for an extended period without requiring winding. This practical feature enhances the watch’s suitability for everyday wear. The mechanism can be viewed through the sapphire crystal caseback.
