SpotlightOne More Moondance: Presenting The Arnold & Son Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite
Arnold & Son’s latest Luna Magna Rose Gold Meteorite features a dial and part of the three-dimensional moon made from meteorite, making this an out-of-the-world watch—quite literally
May We Recommend
For their first timepiece featuring a large lifelike moon, Arnold & Son’s Luna Magna displayed a night sky dial, and the moon’s shadow made from aventurine glass. There have been other materials since, but none as celestially significant as the first Luna Magna. Until now, that is. For their latest Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite, Arnold & Son present the largest moon on a wristwatch in a gorgeous new cosmic avatar, featuring a case made from red gold, framing a blue meteorite dial, with the moon made from matching meteorite and white opal. If the aventurine glass dial was evocative of space, their meteorite dial—literally—comes from space, making the Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite a moon phase wristwatch with a much more powerful statement.
The Larger-Than-Life Luna Magna
Introduced in 2021, the Luna Magna, meaning ‘large moon’ in Latin, featured the timkeeping function on a smaller sub-dial in the upper half, while the lower part showcased the highlight of the watch: a three-dimensional 12mm moon, the largest seen on a watch thus far. This replica of the earth’s satellite was made from white marble, and its dark side was fashioned—very painstakingly—from aventurine glass. The result was a timepiece that was not just breath-taking but also technically sound.
Cosmic Beauty Of The Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite
The Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite is just as spectacular as—if not more fantastic than—its older sibling. A 44m red gold case frames the canvas of the blue meteorite dial of the Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite, with a milky-white opal timekeeping sub-dial. Time is told through elegant arrow-shaped hands and Roman numerals.
The polished 5N red gold of the case and clear white sub-dial serve to highlight the intersecting geometric pattern on the matt blue, PVD-treated meteorite dial. Red gold rings frame the timekeeping subdial and the moon-phase indicator.
Undoubtedly, it is the three-dimensional moon that takes the cake. The spherical reproduction of the celestial body is created partly from cacholong opal and features blue PVD-treated meteorite for the shadow of the moon, which matches the rest of the dial. So, for instance, on a crescent moon night, the display resembles a red gold-framed moon in a celestial-looking sky. Fascinating, right?
The Mechanism Behind The Moon’s Phases
The display caseback of the Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite displays the inner mechanism of the watch, powered by the in-house A&S1021 calibre. Following the lunar cycle of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds, the movement accurately tracks the waxing, waning and all the moon’s other phases accurately for 122 years. Even then, the adjustment can be made via the crown itself—provided one remembers to pass on this information. The caseback also features a two-dimensional display of the moon phase for easy reference.
The idea of meteorite on a moon-phase watch is spectacular in itself. To top that, a large, lifelike moon made from meteorite just leaves no breathing room at all. The celestial beauty and meaning behind the Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite put this limited edition statement-making timepiece ahead of all others that feature a moon phase complication.
