SpotlightCelebrity Watch: TAG Heuer Carrera’s Detailed Role In ‘The Idea Of You’

The latest OTT offering has viewers talking about one crucial character apart from actors Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine… It’s the TAG Heuer Carrera Date model, which is pivotal in carrying forward the narrative

Picture this: A celebrity meets an ‘ordinary’ person… Sparks are exchanged followed by them professing their undying love for each other. Of course, there are challenges in the way of making this relationship work but ultimately, all’s well that ends well. This romantic theme, however, is not groundbreaking and has been shown in several films, including the Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant starrer Notting Hill, released in 1999.

So what makes the new romantic comedy, The Idea Of You featuring actors Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine different? The film takes a more nuanced perspective on relationships in a contemporary world sans the preachiness. Based on actor-turned-writer Robinne Lee’s bestselling novel—speculated to be inspired by singer Harry Styles’s life—the movie is anything but conventional, and takes the viewers on a steamy (and emotional) ride, replete with a refreshing take on the rom-com genre.

TAG Heuer Carrera Date
Inspired by the original model launched in 1963, the TAG Heuer Carrera Date is a 39mm watch in stainless steel with a brushed silver sunray dial, and complements both men and women, as seen in the film

Recently released on the OTT platform Amazon Prime, it features a 40-year-old mom and successful art gallery owner, Solène (played by Hathaway) falling in love with a 24-year-old pop star, Hayes (enacted by Galitzine) in a meet-cute. What follows is an on-and-off romance between the ‘unconventional’ couple—a ‘lost-faith-in-love’ divorcee and a ‘struggling-to-live-a-normal-life’ celeb—who try to keep their spark alive, while also grappling with the realities of the world. In between all this, a third character that plays a crucial role in the making and breaking of this relationship is a TAG Heuer Carrera Date timepiece. Let us explain… Also, spoiler alert!

The Watch Guide
The TAG Heuer Carrera Date is spotted multiple times in the film on both actors. Whenever the couple is together, Solène (played by Hathaway) has it, and when they’re not, Hayes (enacted by Galitzine) wears it. Not just a mere accessory in the movie, this timepiece is a crucial link in carrying forward their story

The watch enters Hayes’ life around the same time that Solène does. A member of the popular boy band, August Moon, Hayes is informed by his manager about bagging ‘the TAG Heuer campaign’. Soon after, both Hayes and Solène meet at her house in Los Angeles, where Hayes deliberately leaves his watch on the table, thus planting an opportunity for another meetup. He then invites Solène to accompany him in New York for the weekend, to which she eventually agrees. The next scene shows her knocking on his hotel door wearing the classic timekeeper. After this, the watch is spotted multiple times in the film on both actors. Whenever the couple is together, Solène has it, and when they’re not, Hayes wears it.

Not just a mere accessory in the movie, this TAG Heuer Carrera timepiece is a crucial link in carrying forward their story, albeit in a subtle manner. Inspired by the original model launched in 1963, the one featured in The Idea Of You is a 39mm watch in stainless steel with a brushed silver sunray dial, and complements both men and women, as seen in the film. It features Super-LumiNova hands and indexes, and a rhodium-plated brand logo positioned at 12 o’clock. The entire timepiece is uniform in colour with only the white date aperture at six o’clock offsetting the look. It is driven by the calibre 5 automatic movement, with a power reserve of at least 38 hours, and offers a water-resistance of up to 100m. Interestingly, the placement of the watch isn’t part of a paid promotion. In fact, it wasn’t initially intended to have a big screen time, as informed by the movie’s product placement coordinator, Karen Neasi to an online publication. However, as the story unfolds, the watch, too, seamlessly becomes an important component of the film, thus moving the narrative forward.

While the film might have received mixed reviews, the TAG Heuer Carrera watch is clearly a winner. By carrying both actors through different emotions, times of the day, and places around the world, the timepiece displays versatility to its highest definition, oscillating perfectly between a trustworthy travel partner and a classic dress piece, complementing different attires. It is a watch for every occasion, indeed!
