SpotlightSeiko’s Stellar Duo: The Astron GPS Solar 2024 Limited Editions

Seiko's newest Astron models prove that high-tech functionality and elegant design aren't mutually exclusive in the world of watches

May We Recommend

There’s something inherently cool about wearing a watch that talks to satellites. While GPS watches have been around for over two decades, Seiko’s latest offerings in the Astron line remind us why the technology still captivates. The new limited edition SSH157 and SSJ027 models aren’t reinventing the wheel, but they’re certainly giving it a fresh spin, blending high-tech functionality with a surprisingly elegant design that catches the eye.

Starry-Eyed Design: Seiko Astron GPS Solar 2024 Limited Editions

What immediately sets these new Astrons apart is their dials. Seiko have created a transparent light blue-lmoulded dial that captures the essence of a starry sky. It’s a clever nod to the watch’s GPS capabilities, sure, but it’s also just plain beautiful. The effect changes depending on how the light hits it, giving the watch a dynamic presence on the wrist that goes beyond mere functionality.

Both models share this celestial aesthetic, but they diverge in execution. The SSH157, measuring 43.3mm, is the more complex of the two. It’s a chronograph with dual-time functionality, making it a solid choice for frequent travellers or those who need to keep track of multiple time zones. Despite the additional complications, the dial remains surprisingly legible, thanks to thoughtful design and contrasting elements.

The SSJ027, on the other hand, takes a more minimalistic approach. With a slightly smaller 41.2mm case, it offers a cleaner dial that really lets that starry pattern shine. There’s just a single sub-dial at eight o’clock for GPS and power reserve indicators. It’s the purist’s choice—all the tech, with less visual clutter.

Titanium: Lightweight Yet Tough

Both watches feature titanium cases and bracelets, which feels like the right call for pieces packing this much technology. Seiko have applied their ‘super-hard’ coating to both, promising better resistance against everyday wear and tear. The use of titanium also keeps the weight down, which is particularly noticeable on the larger SSH157.

The case designs themselves are angular and modern, with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces that play well with the dynamic dials. It’s a significant evolution from the earlier, bulkier Astron models—these new editions feel sleek and purposeful.

The Tech Inside

Of course, the real star of the show is what’s under the hood. The SSH157 is powered by the Calibre 5X83, while the SSJ027 uses the Calibre 3X62. Both are solar-powered GPS movements, capable of connecting to satellites to ensure accuracy and automatic time zone adjustment.

These aren’t just highly accurate quartz movements (though they are, with precision of ±15 seconds per month even without GPS sync). They’re technological marvels that can determine your location, adjust for daylight savings time, and even handle leap seconds. With power reserves of up to six months (or two years in power-save mode), they’re as practical as they are impressive.

What’s particularly cool is how Seiko has managed to package all this technology in a way that doesn’t scream ‘gadget’. These are watches you could easily wear to a board meeting or on vacation, all while silently communicating with satellites overhead.

Choosing Your Star

The SSH157, with its chronograph functionality and dual-time display, is clearly aimed at the frequent traveller or the tech enthusiast who loves having all the bells and whistles. The SSJ027, with its cleaner dial and more focused feature set, feels like it’s for those who appreciate the technology but want something that can fly under the radar a bit more.

Both models are limited to 1,500 pieces each, which adds a nice touch of exclusivity.
