Doxa’s association with American adventure novelist Clive Cussler began when he received the revolutionary orange Doxa Sub 300T in 1969. Dirk Pitt, the fictional hero in Cussler’s novels went on to sport the orange Sub 300T, which served as a handy tool and trusty companion in his adventures underwater. In celebration of the late author’s 93rd birthday this year, Doxa release the Sub 300T SharkHunter Clive Cussler Edition with an aged steel case and vintage-looking dial featuring a compass, an eternal symbol for exploration.
Doxa X Clive Cussler
Like many fictional heroes, Cussler’s protagonist Dirk Pitt went on to mirror the author’s own penchant for exploration. The most noticeable similarity between the writer and his character was the orange Doxa Sub 300T they both sported. Long after the quartz crisis impacted the Swiss watchmaker, stopping production of the Sub, Dirk Pitt continued to refer to his orange Sub 300T, which had become sort of an important character in his adventures now. When Doxa resumed operations in 1997 after their dormancy, they re-released the Sub 300T in 2001, still a famous tool from Cussler’s novels. In 2023, Doxa presented a tribute to the late author in the form of their Doxa Sub 300T Clive Cussler edition with a deliberately aged case and dial. This year, Doxa followed the beige dial watch with the Sub 300T SharkHunter Clive Cussler edition.
Aged Patina Of The Doxa Sub 300T SharkHunter Clive Cussler Watch
Doxa’s Sub 300T SharkHunter Clive Cussler timepiece will be produced in a limited 93-piece edition—as a nod to what would be the author’s age this year. A deliberately aged coating decorates the ‘egg-shaped’ steel case measuring 42.5mm, and a unidirectional rotating bezel, with shark-toothed edging for easy handling with diving gloves, features the same finish. The bezel has two scales—in black numerals is a dive timer that displays elapsed time under water, and a no-decompression scale in red measures how long a diver can stay at a certain depth without stopping to decompress while resurfacing.
The closed caseback is decorated with engraved names of shipwrecks explored or discovered by NUMA, or the National Underwater and Marine Agency, a non-profit founded by Cussler to aid underwater exploration. The watch is paired with the brand’s ‘beads of rice’ bracelet and comes with an additional black rubber strap.
Doxa Sub 300T SharkHunter Clive Cussler Edition’s Spirit Of Exploration
Doxa’s black ‘sharkhunter’ dial is decorated with a vintage-looking compass rose, an emblem of adventure and maritime exploration. Besides pointing to the four directions, this compass connects the cardinal points on the watch. Rectangular indexes and hands are generously filled with Super-LumiNova. At three o’clock is the date window where numerals corresponding with Cussler’s birthday—July 15, 1931, or seven, 15 and 31—stand out in red numerals.
The Doxa Sub 300T SharkHunter Clive Cussler edition is the brand’s way of paying tribute to a loyal enthusiast that kept the iconic orange dive watch ticking long after production of the timepiece had stopped. This timepiece is a collectible for Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt fans, those who love adventure and underwater exploration, or both.
