SpotlightIt’s Getting More Complicated: Introducing The H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Retrograde Seconds Timepiece

With a half-minute retrograde seconds display on its minimalist dial, the H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Retrograde Seconds timepiece combines contemporary sophistication with vintage inspiration for yet another new complication for the brand

May We Recommend

With the introduction of the Pioneer Retrograde Seconds timepiece, H. Moser & Cie. add yet another complication into their collection. This latest release follows on the heels of the Streamliner Minute Repeater Tourbillon showcased earlier this year, and the Pioneer Cylindrical Tourbillon in 2023. Featuring a half-minute retrograde seconds display on the lower part of the dial, the H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Retrograde Seconds timepiece displays a fascinating complication, even if it is not all that functional. And considering the inspiration for this—that of measuring instruments and speedometers—the sporty Pioneer line seems a fitting base. Displayed against a beautiful midnight blue fumé dial with an ombré effect, the retrograde seconds offers a visual treat. Also interesting is the brand’s secret signature, visible at certain angles only where light reflects off its lacquer.

Pioneering Approach To Complex Displays: H. Moser Pioneer Retrograde Seconds

While the Streamliner, with its integrated, aerodynamic bracelet, may have become the focal point for the brand in the last four years, the Pioneer has been a mainstay for Moser since 2015. With a water resistance of 120m, the Pioneer line is a blend of sporty and dressy sophistication. Its sporty nature makes it ideal for expressing innovations or new complications for the brand. Case in point: the Pioneer Cylindrical Tourbillon, which won the GPHG in the tourbillon category in 2022. And now, the brand release the Pioneer Retrograde Seconds.

Pioneers In Minimalism: H. Moser Pioneer Retrograde Seconds

A retrograde seconds display means that the seconds hand at six jumps back to its starting point after it reaches the 30-second mark. On the H. Moser Pioneer Retrograde Seconds timepiece, this phenomenon takes place twice in a minute. Interestingly, the double snail cam that aids the 30-second mechanism is mounted on a two-tone disc which indicates whether the first or the second half of the minute is underway. The movement that powers this timepiece is the self-winding HMC 250, created in partnership with Agenhor SA, a movement maker that specialise in retrograde displays. With a minimum power reserve of three days, the movement features an automatic bi-directional pawl winding system. An engraved and skeletonised oscillating weight offers a better view of the other components of the calibre.

The fumé dial of the Pioneer Retrograde Seconds timepiece features a sunray-finish that highlights the darkening around the periphery. Faceted indexes correspond with luminous dots marked on the flange, and leaf shaped timekeeping hands are filled with Super-LumiNova. This aids legibility in dimly-lit conditions.
