Round-UpWatch T20 – Watches of Cricketers
Ever thought cricketers don’t have taste in watches? Think again!
May We Recommend
You might have seen Kohli finish the game with his signature cover drives and Afridi making lives difficult for the opposition with his on-field charisma, but apart from what they do best on the field, ever wondered what they like to have on their wrist? Turns out, cricketers are pretty fond of watches too and while some of them have a fine taste in luxury timepieces, some prefer the most unusual ones (which they wear even on match days). With the T20 World Cup finally kicking off in India, here’s what we found out about some of the world’s most celebrated cricketers and their preferred timepieces.
Virat Kohli (India) – Tissot
Demolishing almost every bowling line up in the world with his current form, Virat Kohli is simply unstoppable right now.
The future successor of Dhoni’s empire and already leading the country’s test side, Virat is well known for his clever style of play, great fielding and leadership qualities. Tissot recently announced him as their global brand ambassador and the watch he chose to have on his wrist was strikingly similar to his style of play: clever, durable and dependable – The Tissot T-Touch Solar Titanium.
“A watch is about the only accessory I love wearing and I am so happy that Tissot is what I will be wearing now.”
Good choice, Virat. And make us proud!
Mitchell McCleneghan (New Zealand) – Casio
The tall and muscular left arm pacer from Auckland, who also plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL is in fact, the one who has the most unusual choice in watches.
Mitch, on most of the match days, has his white (out of all colours) Casio G-shock on. Surprising choice? Indeed. But a strategic one too.
G-Shock watches from Casio are designed to withstand the most severe shocks and vibrations with almost 10 different layers of protection. Any standard G-shock watch would have a rubber bumper which protects the solid stainless steel case within. Hardened mineral glass & the stainless steel screwed down case back is additional protection for the one of a kind “floating module”: where the quartz mechanism of the watch floats free in a urethane foam cradle, which allows the watch to withstand all forms of shocks.

Unusual indeed but the smartest choice for a fast bowler we’d say!
David Warner (Australia) – Hublot
You wouldn’t want to mess with this Aussie on the field. The left-handed opener from New South Wales, known for his explosive style of play will have his eyes on every bowler this World Cup.
And why shouldn’t he! David is a game changer and his choice of watch only reflects his ‘badass’ personality. Spotted on his wrist several times is the Hublot Big Bang Black magic.
Hublot & David are both coincidentally fond of the unconventional, which isn’t surprising why this watch has a unique Carbon fibre dial, housed in a stunning 44mm ‘Microblasted’ black ceramic case and a powerful in-house automatic chronograph movement with a 42hour power reserve. For a man with an ‘explosive’ personality, this is indeed a perfect choice!
Faf Du Plessis (South Africa) – Panerai
The unsung hero of the South African team and A.B. De Villers partner in crime, he might be ‘unsung’ but rarely does he go unnoticed. Faf du Plessis is a calm and mature player, known for his old-school style of play, and with all his successful experiences in Indian conditions under Dhoni in the IPL, he will be the player to watch out for this World Cup.
But beyond cricket, we’re sure you wouldn’t have known that he too, is a great admirer of watches. His choice? Not surprisingly a watch that never gets unnoticed.
Faf loves his Panerai(s) and has shared his watch collection with his fans many times on his Instagram page. Our pick, out of his entire collection would surely be the Panerai 8 Days Luminor GMT, with a fairly big 44 mm polished rose-gold case and is powered by the in-house Calibre P.2002 – which is a manual-winding mechanical movement, but once fully wound has a healthy eight-day power reserve. Old school and stylish, just like the man himself.
Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) – Rado
Call him ‘Lala’ if you don’t want to call him ‘Boom – Boom’ because the latter only signifies what he does to your favorite team when he’s in form. Brought into the Pakistan team as a bowler when he was just 16 years old, it just took him two matches to show what he’s made of as a batsman when he scored the fastest century in the world, a record that stood for more than 17 years. Shahid Afridi has entertained the world with his flamboyant style of batting and has always been the ace in the pack for Pakistan. And you’d be lying to yourself if you said you weren’t a fan of his game.
‘Unlimited Sprit’ could have well and truly been his personal tagline and ‘Lala’ was in fact (and reportedly still is) the brand ambassador of Rado, a brand renowned for mastering the art of ceramic watches.
Now, why wouldn’t this be his choice?
Rohit Sharma (India) – Hublot
When he sticks to the crease, he’s any team’s nightmare. The only batsman to have two 200’s under his belt, Rohit Sharma has demolished almost every front line bowling attack in the world with his ‘lazy elegance’. But when it comes to watches, his choice was simple.
Hublot just announced him as a “Friend of the brand” during the ICC World T20 and quite obviously his choice was the Limited Edition Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph, a sporty watch specially created as a dedication to the spirit of Cricket.
The watch itself is unique! Featuring ‘cricket bat’ hands on the two chronograph counters, a blue calfskin strap stitched onto black rubber with triple saddle stitching (which resembles a cricket ball) and the three markers at 12 o’clock (representing the stumps)! The see-through sapphire crystal case back, where you can see the inner workings of the watch, has the ICC World Twenty20 symbol etched on it.
Honestly, we’re not surprised the “hit-man” chose a watch that goes with his national jersey!
From the Archives: Shane Warne (Australia) – Tag Heuer
Shane Warne – The cricketer renowned for never giving up, who believed in his skills and could literally turn it around for his team in his day is today Shane Warne – the philanthropist.
But the #Don’tCrackUnderPressure motto still lives on with Warnie, who is not only an admirer of watches but also works closely with his favourite brand TAG Heuer – that supports his foundation for the cause of underprivileged children in Australia.
Spotted in one of his fund-raising events, Shane had the classic, TAG Heuer Carrera on his wrist.
All the above featured watches are available at Ethos Watch Boutiques.
