May We Recommend
Buzzing with activity, with talk of smaller dials, heritage collections, and pushing the boundaries further with existing flagship lines, the 2018 edition of SIHH has been extremely exciting so far. While some fine watchmaking maisons are celebrating anniversaries, others are venturing into new territories. Juxtaposed against the clean lines in some designs are high complication pieces and technically-driven visual marvels.

Cartier’s ‘Revelations’
Cartier has gone all out this year, with a new edition of the Santos, breathing new life into the classic collection that was the first to put a watch on the wrist. This new Santos is a renewal of the square case and dial, with rivets on the bezel. Only this time, the bezel seemingly extends onto the bracelet, also designed with rivets. Impressively, the design translates seamlessly into the leather strap versions as well. This is why Cartier has made it extremely simple to interchange the bracelet, by the push of a piece on the underside of the strap. Adding to this is the simple adjustment of the length of the metal bracelet, through tiny push-pieces behind the bracelet. This adjustment can be easily carried out by the wearer, and without any tools at that.
While there were several other impressive products from Cartier, including a few that we gave you a sneak peek of earlier, the most impressive was the Révélation d’une Panthère. This watch, quite literally reveals a Panthère motif as you rotate your wrist to look at the time. Through an invisible maze on the inside of the sapphire crystal, 900 gold beads cascade down to form this enigmatic motif. It’s indeed a gorgeous aesthetic incorporation, especially given its muse is the movement of sand in an hourglass.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Introduces Their New Polaris Line
The need of the hour was a more regular watch than Jaeger-LeCoultre’s offering of classical pieces such as their Master and Reverso pieces. But then there’s nothing regular about what these prestige watchmakers do. Drawing from their illustrious archives, as they celebrate their 185th anniversary this year, Jaeger-LeCoultre revived their 1968 diver’s watch, the Memovox Polaris, giving us an exciting new line in the Polaris collection. These watches are available in automatic, date, chronograph and world time versions, with interchangeable straps in some of them.
Dials are complete with sunray and grain finishing, with applied indices which are adequately infused with SuperLuminova for clear legibility. Included in this new range are the new Polaris Memovox, which pays tribute to the line’s inspiration. These two watches are available with rubber straps, and the glass seen on each is a sapphire crystal box – a raised design that gives it added dimension – which was only available in Plexiglas in the 1968 edition.
With several options in dial and strap colours and materials, this line has something for everyone. Moreover, interchangeability seems to be a big trend this year, and Jaeger-LeCoultre is indeed a part of it.
