ReviewIn Focus: Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton—Translucent Series

The Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton—Translucent is everything its title promises. At just below 100g, the watch breaks norms, while retaining the brand’s signature elements

May We Recommend

Originally inspired by military-bombing timers, the Chronofighter series became a cornerstone of Graham over the past two decades for its distinctive style and the signature left-sided chronograph lever. Chronofighter variants have been stretched out, shrunk down, crafted in steel to silver, but their features were never compromised. These models prioritise movement and appearance, which is what makes the series one of the recognisable chronographs you can come across. The Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton—Translucent series of two watches is the latest offering by the brand. The high point of the blue and green models is their featherlight construction, made possible by combining epoxy resin and carbon.

Mid-Case Magic

The highlight of the Graham Chronofighter Superlight Translucent series is the mid-case. It is made from a translucent low-mass epoxy resin, amplified by blue or green Super-LumiNova. Further, the resin is infused with flecks of metallised carbon fibre and bronze tones to create the right contrast.

Embedded in this resin case is the superlight carbon dial. On both 47mm models, the dials are big and skeletal, while the overall watch construction ensures the weight remains a little under 100g. The widespread use of 3K carbon promises innovation with function, by keeping the models scratch-resistant. The raised sub-dial tracks and exposed screws on the dial are a visual delight. The two elements offer the perfect support for the illuminated lume channel surrounding it. Matched seamlessly with the prominent hour and minute hands, the dial looks good as good in daylight as it does in the dark.

The Chronofighter’s Signature Trigger

This edition, armed with the house’s quintessential thumb-operated trigger on the left side of the dial, is fashioned in black rubber and embellished with clous de Paris decoration. A clear nod to the ingenious craftsmanship of the brand is the fast-action start/stop trigger’s artistry, which demonstrates how good design places functionality above vanity. With a power reserve of 48 hours, the automatic skeleton chronograph G1790 offers full view of the movement in black and rhodium, decorated with hand-drawn strokes. Featuring an Incabloc shock absorber and 29 jewels, the Graham watch showcases its balance wheel and escapement in full splendour without disturbing the harmony of hands.
