Dive watches first emerged in the 1930s when, despite the advancements in waterproof cases and crown systems being in full swing, a lacuna was felt by marine researchers and diving professionals in the realm of high-functioning diving tools. Initially, there were hardly any takers from the general public for these tools when they started entering mainstream collections. Among a spate of commercial dive watches that emerged in that era was the Seascoper, Titoni’s first dive watch, launched in the 1970s. The black dial watch sported distinctive design features such a bezel with markings and 200m water-resistance properties. The robust, watertight case became a hit with underwater adventurers and professionals.
As an ode to this pathbreaking dive timer, the brand launched the Seascoper 600 in 2020 as a result of a design collaboration with diver, underwater photographer and marine biologist, Uli Kunz. This evolved timepiece was geared for professional diving as the COSC-certified chronometer showcased the brand’s in-house T10 manufacture movement and water resistance up to 600m. In 2022, Titoni expanded the dive watch line further by adding the Seascoper 600 CarbonTech, a lightweight and scratch-resistant dive watch made entirely from carbon, except for its crown, bezel insert and caseback.
Carbon karma
The Seascoper 600 CarbonTech in sturdy carbon from the features found in the 1979 original—albeit with a more 21st-century aesthetic. The rotating bezel display a ceramic insert with colour infill, the sleek case lines and an automatic COSC in-house movement make it an ideal dive companion. This edition is available in three versions: markers in either white; blue with white; or white with colours of the rainbow on the bezel. The 42mm carbon case is attached to a strap either in rubber or in eco-friendly textile made from 100-percent recycled ocean plastic. With this initiative, Titoni make a valuable contribution to reducing the use of virgin raw materials.
More Than A Diving Tool
The Seascoper 600 CarbonTech thrives on durability. To keep the watch water-resistant, the screw-down crown is fixed with a special gasket system. Additionally, the tough casing and T10 manufacture movement makes the case resistant to pressure, impact and even dust. This COSC-certified chronometer calibre offers a 72-hour or three-day power reserve, viewable through its porthole caseback. This feature stands out as most professional dive watches are not equipped with open casebacks.
The flat sapphire crystal glass is non-reflective, which makes checking time easy. The 60-click unidirectional-rotating dive-timer bezel takes the precision of keeping time to a whole new level. Its serrated edge applied with radiant luminescence provides a firm grip. Even the thick watch hands and hour markers display a generous coating of lume, which in turn are a sharp contrast against the jet black dial. This watch is designed for daily use as well as prolonged underwater activity. The Seascoper 600 CarbonTech thus exemplifies how the dive watch has evolved from just being a diver’s tool to a highly functional design accessory.
