Round-UpGreener Pastures: Presenting The Top Green Dial Watches From Rado

The refreshing calm offered by Rado’s green dial watches serves to highlight not just the brand’s mastery over materials but also their deep understanding of a bold colour that instantly commands attention

May We Recommend

A symbol of growth, renewal, harmony and prosperity, green on a watch could be refreshing and calming, or bold and statement making, depending on one’s perspective. The thing that’s certain, though, is that green dials are here to stay. And they’re not competing with the blacks and blues anymore, they’ve carved a distinct niche for themselves on the horological map, having made that arduous journey from ‘attention-seeking’ to ‘attention-grabbing’ in a relatively short span. ‘Master of materials’ Rado have created some beautiful watches with this humble hue displayed in all its calming glory on their dials. The top Rado green dial watches include the brand’s best-recognised Captain Cook line of dive timepieces, featuring one in a bronze case that best offsets the deep forest-green of the dial, and another in a gorgeous gradient dial against stainless steel, with yellow-gold highlights.

There are also other remarkable Rado green dial watches, such as the futuristic-looking DiaStar Original, the True Secret whose gradient highlights the open heart displayed through a circular window at 12 o’clock, and the elegant True Square automatic set against a ceramic case and bracelet.

Captain Cook Automatic Bronze

Undoubtedly among Rado’s best-selling collections, the Captain Cook line of divers’ watches is inspired by British explorer Captain James Cook. Revisiting a 1962 classic, Rado released the Captain Cook Automatic Bronze with a rich, forest-green sunray-brushed dial against a vintage looking 42mm bronze case. Bronze, the oldest man-made alloy in the world, is a popular choice for a dive watch collection because of its durability and corrosion-resistance. The metallic golden-brown of the bronze case best displays the deep green of the dial. A bronze unidirectional-rotating bezel with a deep green ceramic insert enhances the yellow applied indexes coloured in a retro-inspired shade of Super-LumiNova. The best part of owning the watch is the knowledge that, over time, this copper-tin alloy will develop a rich patina, making each timepiece distinctive. Housed within the case is Rado’s automatic R763 calibre, which offers an 80-hour power reserve, and enhanced anti-magnetism, courtesy of the Nivachron hairspring.

Captain Cook Automatic

Despite having the same powerful heart as its retro-inspired sibling, the Captain Cook Automatic timepiece is a more contemporary everyday accessory. The 42mm steel case of the watch features a yellow-gold PVD-coated steel bezel with a green ceramic insert. The central link of the steel bracelet has a yellow-gold finish that allows the beautiful green gradient dial to pop. A golden crown stands out against the polished steel of the case, and the minute track on the yellow-gold flange ring enhances the green of the bezel and the shaded dial. Lighter towards the centre, the dial darkens to almost black around the periphery, allowing the yellow-gold applied indexes to pop against the rich hue. These indexes are coloured in white Super-LumiNova, aiding legibility in low light.

DiaStar Original

The distinct oval-shaped, cushion-style steel and Ceramos case of the DiaStar Original features a shaded green dial, brushed in different directions to give the leafy hue an almost futuristic appearance. A facetted sapphire crystal glass protects this dial, its vertical angles adding a unique dimension to the horizontal and vertical brushing within. The watch’s Matrix-like appearance is further enhanced by a vertical day-date window at six o’clock. This green DiaStar Original is a very cool-looking watch indeed. Powering the watch is the Rado automatic R764 calibre, with the anti-magnetic and hyper-accurate Nivachron hairspring, and an approximate 80-hour power reserve. H-shaped links on the bracelet improve not just the aesthetics but also ergonomics of the watch.

True Round Secret

Made from plasma high-tech ceramic and titanium, this True Round Secret is testament to Rado’s play with materials. The round 40mm monobloc case frames a gradient green dial with a circular window offering a view of the balance wheel. The rich bottle green hue on the lower half of the dial lightens to a lime-green around the round open heart at 12 o’clock. The minimalistic dial features rhodium-coloured timekeeping hands with a matt black veneer. The ‘secret’ inside is the automatic and anti-magnetic R734 calibre, with a power reserve of 80 hours. Despite the gorgeous dial, the best part of this watch is the ceramic case and bracelet that make it light on the wrist and extremely sturdy.

True Square Automatic

Pioneers with ceramic, Rado were the first to create a square-shaped ceramic watch in 1990, the Ceramica. They followed this with another pathbreaking material—plasma high-tech ceramic—in 2020. The monobloc quadrilateral case of the True Square Automatic flows seamlessly and fluidly into the plasma high-tech ceramic three-link bracelet. An olive green square dial with slim baton, rhodium-coloured indexes and hands gives the watch a decidedly elegant appearance. That the square has sharp but rounded edges serves to enhance the classy aesthetic of the timepiece. Sized at a comfortable 38mm, the watch is lightweight, courtesy of the material of the case and strap, and extremely wearable.

Special Mention: HyperChrome Chronograph

The robust 44.5mm steel and ceramic case of the HyperChrome Chronograph features a dark green bezel neatly marked with a white tachymeter scale, and a rich green sunray brushed dial punctuated by three chronograph counters with beautiful snailed detailing. Yellow-gold markers and hands, and a similarly gilded central link on the steel bracelet highlight the rich green of the dial.

These Rado green dial watches prove the brand’s mastery over materials. But they also prove more than just successful experiments with ceramic, bronze, steel and titanium—these Rado green dial watches show just how much deliberation goes into making their timepieces practical as well as beautiful and attention-grabbing.
