Few watches can carry off a classical design and modern aesthetic in one case like the Nomos Metro collection does. Surprisingly, the Metro series by the Glashütte-based watchmaker, featuring a clean and contemporary design, is not as popular as the brand’s Tangente or Club collections. Unsurprisingly, the first Metro Date Power Reserve watch wowed award juries from Red Dot, IF, Good Design and German Design, among others. Now, Nomos reintroduce the Metro 33 timepiece in three new iterations, with a 33mm stainless steel case designed for smaller wrists. Thus far, the Metro 33 was only available in a rose gold case featuring a silver-white dial. The steel cases come in three new dial hues—silver, sage, and a muted red, with restrained but really cool pops of colour on the sage and red versions.

Introduced in 2014, the Metro was quite unlike Nomos’s other collections. The watch, designed by Berlin-based Mark Braun, had an off-centred layout, with the logo at nine and a power reserve indicator between 12 and one o’clock. It’s 37mm case profile and curved wire lugs evoked vintage timepieces, while the minimalistic dial added a touch of contemporary urban playfulness. The Metro was powered by the brand’s manual-winding calibre DUW 4401, featuring the Nomos swing system. The latest Metro 33 timepieces, also designed by Braun, are as much an expression of ‘urban chic’ as the first Metro. “For me, they are what I understand by contemporary elegance: smart, playful, and full of energy,” Braun says.

Small Watch, Big Impact: Metro 33 In Colour

The 33mm steel case of the newest Metro 33 features the line’s curved wire lugs with the brand’s quick-change spring bars. The intricate diamond knurling on the crown makes it easy to handle. The watches are paired with light grey vegan velour leather straps.

Dial options of silver, red and sage green are reminiscent of the big city, with silver for the concrete and glass structures, muted red for brick facades, and sage for the green spaces that dot a metropolitan city. The silver model features a sunray-brushed dial with a snailed small seconds sub-dial at six o’clock. White dot markers for hours enhance the minimalism of the watch, while darker slate grey Arabic numerals in intervals of five mark the minute track around the periphery, punctuated with deep teal dots. The red dial features pink in the dots for minute markers as well as in the small seconds hand, while the sage version showcases these tiny but noticeable details in a cool yellow.
