This year will mark India’s 75th Republic Day—an important historical landmark, when the country adopted the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950. Along with this, it also became a sovereign state, and was declared a ‘republic’—a country where the power of electing representatives or heads of state and government reside with the people. The celebrations have already begun in full swing as the entire nation is gripped with patriotic fervor, and a natural extension of this sentiment has found its way into the horological realm as well.
Japanese watchmaker Seiko—known for producing some of the most precise timekeepers in the world have paid homage to India’s illustrious heritage by introducing the ‘Made of Glory’ India Limited Edition. Part of the Seiko 5 Sports collection—these timepieces come in two variants—one with an indigo blue dial and the other with an ivory white dial—each limited to 1,200 pieces only, encased in an intricately crafted presentation box. Launched in 1963, the Seiko 5 Sports watches have been hallmarks of reliability, durability, performance, and value—qualities that resonate with mechanical watch enthusiasts. They stand out for their rugged case design and robust features—ideal for people who lead active lifestyles.
Given Seiko’s commitment to encapsulating the unique narratives of India’s rich culture, this watch stands as an emblem of the nation’s splendid journey. Both versions are available with stainless-steel bracelets and also with an optional navy blue rubber strap, scoring high on the visual appeal. The steel strap is engineered in a fashion that it is equipped to withstand a demanding lifestyle. The bezel showcases the three key colours symbolising India’s unity and diversity—Saffron, White, and Green.
They are powered by the 4R36 automatic movement, visible through the exhibition caseback, containing 24 jewels with the day/date window sits neatly at three o’clock. One gets the rugged functional design and the intricate mechanism, which have been nurtured by Seiko over their 140-year-old glorious history.
