They say that one’s truest competitor can only be yesterday’s version of oneself. Foregoing the race for the slimmest watch or thinnest complication, Arnold & Son have kept on their path of producing carefully crafted complications in the most beautiful way possible. Their aim, it seems, is to better their own work when it comes to both form and function. If the Arnold & Son Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton timepieces are anything to go by, the brand are succeeding, and then some. The Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton timepieces feature stunning openworked dials displayed against platinum or red gold, with a flying tourbillon taking centrestage at six o’clock.
Essentially, this is a much-improved version of their 2016 timepiece featuring a skeleton dial and tourbillon escapement in an ultra-thin watch, the UTTE Skeleton. The new Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton features a highly detailed and beautifully finished rose gold treated movement that serves as the watch’s dial. Even beyond its form, the watch’s function too has improved considerably, with a slimmer tourbillon that provides enhanced stability, and a whopping 100-hour power reserve. Both platinum and red gold versions are limited to 28 pieces each.
Precious Metals Of The Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton
The 41.5mm round cases of the Arnold & Son Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton watches are crafted from platinum 950, or 18 karat 5N red gold. Their height of 8.4mm includes the domed sapphire crystal glass over the dial, and flat crystal on the caseback, both of which are treated with anti-reflective coating. Alligator leather straps enhance the luxury of the metals, with the platinum watch paired with brown and red gold with blue. The crown at three and the clasps on the leather straps match the platinum and red gold of the cases. But this is just the frame within which the magic really takes place.
Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton’s Dial And Movement
The dial of the Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton is magic in motion. Openworked, rose gold, PVD treated mainplate and bridges of the manual-winding A&S8320 calibre function as the decoration on the dial, with a Côtes de Genève pattern enhancing the finish. Despite the skeletonisation on the timekeeping sub-dial at 12 o’clock, legibility on the watch is much improved, courtesy of the opal white base for Roman numerals, and contrasting blue arrow hands against the rose gold of the movement. Offering enhanced precision, the flying tourbillon in a slender carriage at six o’clock serves as the small-seconds sub-dial.
On turning the watch over, the symmetry and decoration of the movement commands respect and admiration. Despite the openworked nature of this particular timepiece, for those who appreciate a certain visual balance, the caseback is a treat. Add to that a commendable power reserve of 100 hours and the Arnold & Son Ultrathin Tourbillon Skeleton is a timepiece worth its weight in gold—or platinum, if you please.
