Whatever else it may be, the new Chronoswiss Open Gear Flying Tourbillon Psycho timepiece is most definitely not for the faint of heart. This latest update to the brand’s 2020 Open Gear Flying Tourbillon collection is bold in both form and function. Named for the riot of colour that first hits the viewer, the watch screams attention from the get go. But this is a good thing because only on looking closer can one appreciate the watch for what it is—a beautiful, if a bit insane, expression of fine watchmaking. However, regardless of the impact of the watch in a well-lit space, the full insanity—and stroke of genius—of the Chronoswiss Open Gear Flying Tourbillon timepiece can be felt only in low lighting conditions.
Beyond The Spectrum: Chronoswiss Open Gear Flying Tourbillon Psycho
The steel case of the Open Gear Flying Tourbillon features a vivid purple CVD coating that encompasses the exaggerated onion crown, coin-edged knurling on the polished bezel, and screws on the lugs that hold down the strap. Sapphire crystal is used for the glass and the caseback of the timepiece. Displayed through the caseback is the brand’s C.303 manual-winding calibre, whose skeletonised bridges feature a blue CVD coating, forming a filigreed window into the skeletonised spring barrel and balance wheel with a galvanic anthracite finish. The purple case is paired with an electric blue alligator hornback leather strap with bright green stitching, and orange alcantara inside.

Semi-skeletonised, the dial is where the beauty and the insanity of the Chronoswiss Open Gear Flying Tourbillon Psycho timepiece lie. The hand-guilloche upper half displays the brand’s dynamic Paraiba hues that change from green to turquoise as the light touches it at varying angles. Against this guilloche base lies a bright orange hour ring, supported by a vibrant purple bridge. A central minute hand and an off-centred hour hand are both filled generously with Super-LumiNova. Around the periphery of the dial is the minute track on a light blue base, with circular markers at five-minute intervals, each of which is filled with lume in a different hue. This design aspect, without a doubt, is the watch’s understated genius.
At six o’clock is the brand’s tourbillon, exposed and seemingly floating between the two crystals protecting both dial and caseback. Around the tourbillon is the CVD-treated blue baseplate of the movement, enhancing the contrast of colour and the visual depth of the multi-layered dial.
