SpotlightGeneva Watch Days 2021: Doxa Present Two New Refreshing Sub Timepieces

Pioneers of crafting reliable and durable dive watches, the Swiss-based watchmakers Doxa have once again taken inspiration from their glorious past and reissued the much-loved Sub 600T, with some notable updates and top-notch technology, in addition to the latest edition of their entry-level dive watch, Sub 200, in a never-seen-before colour

With the delta variant of coronavirus wreaking havoc across several countries, in-person gatherings at trade shows are still uncommon. However, the shows must go on, one way or another, for the world of horology. After the success of the digital edition of Watches and Wonders Geneva earlier this year, Geneva Watch Days began on August 30 and continued till September 3. Just like in 2020, the high-end fair followed the ‘phygital’ format—that is blending digital experiences with physical ones—where more than 20 luxury watch brands presented both their already existing pieces and introduced new novelties. Among them were Doxa.

At the 2021 edition of Geneva Watch Days, more than 20 luxury watch brands presented their current talking pieces as well as new novelties. Among them were Doxa with their new Sub 200 model in a never-seen-before colour—‘Whitepearl’

Known for crafting cult-favourite timepieces such as the Sub 300T and Sub 4000T, the Swiss watchmakers, in 2021, have released two refreshing timepieces that showcase the durability they offer along with versatility. The all-new Sub 600T Pacific takes its design cues from the watches manufactured by the brand during the 1980s, and it comes in a titanium case, along with a distinctive combination of colours. Another watch launched during the event was the Sub 200 in a never-seen-before hue—‘Whitepearl’. Let’s dive a little deeper and take a closer look at them.

Sub 600T Pacific Limited Edition: A 2021 Update Of A Past Success

Doxa originally presented the Sub 600T in the 1980s and it quickly gained prominence among watch collectors and diving professionals because of its angular 39mm case design and a crown uniquely placed at the four o’clock position. The overall silhouette of the watch was rather a welcome departure from the ubiquitous tonneau- or barrel-shaped timepieces available at the time, and it offered something new and exciting. Apart from featuring the patented Doxa unidirectional-rotating bezel, the watch was equipped with a reliable and trusted calibre 5910, which was based on the ETA 2782 and didn’t require regular servicing. Issued in several colours, these Sub 600T models—like the other watches made by the brand during that decade—are referred to as ‘Aubry-era’ pieces as Doxa was then owned by Aubry Frères, a Swiss watch brand founded in 1917.

Now, after more than four decades, the brand pay homage to the aforementioned watch with the release of the Sub 600T Pacific, a timepiece that Doxa crafted in collaboration with the Australian watch blog Time+Tide. Limited to just 200 units, the new model retains most of the aesthetics of the original watch but with notable updates. For example, the designers at Doxa have upsized the case to 40mm, and it is made from ultra-lightweight titanium with flawless finishing, including brushed surfaces. The unidirectional-rotating bezel featuring ceramic consists of clean notches and comes with dive time in minutes and depth in feet, which ensures safe accents without decompression stops. Meanwhile, the dial is offered in a new colour called the ‘Pacific blue’—a reference to the shimmering water surrounding Australia, the home of Time+Tide. With a central three-hand timekeeping system, along with Super-LumiNova-coated ‘shark tooth’ hour markers at three, six, nine and 12 o’clock, the dial remains uncluttered and perfectly legible even in low light conditions.

On Turning over the Sub 600T Pacific, we see its solid caseback with an engraving that mentions the partnership between Doxa and Time+Tide. Under the hood, there is the tried-and-tested Sellita SW200 movement, which runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and provides a power reserve of 38 hours. Water-resistant up to a whopping 600m, the timepiece is paired with a blue rubber strap that features a titanium-built clasp with Doxa’s fish insignia.

Sub 200 Whitepearl: The Latest In Doxa’s Sub Palette

First revealed in 2019, the Sub 200 is an entry-level diving watch by Doxa and it’s available in vibrant colours, including orange (called Professional), silver (Searambler), black (Sharkhunter), navy blue (Caribbean), yellow (Divingstar) and turquoise (Aquamarine). At Geneva Watch Days 2021, the watchmakers added the seventh colour to their collection with the introduction of the new Sub 200 Whitepearl, which can be a perfect go-to timepiece for the summer.

Aesthetically speaking, the timepiece is identical to its previous avatars and is presented in a 42mm steel case with a curved profile. Featuring a unidirectional bezel, brushed and finished polishing, and a screw-down crown, the Sub 200 Whitepearl offers water resistance up to 200m. The pure white dial displays only necessary indications and remains subtle and minimalistic. Thanks to the black baton-shaped hands, the black outline of the hour indices and the date aperture, the dial provides a shot of monochromatic style and is a delight to look at. Powering the timepiece is the ETA 2824-2 movement that beats at a frequency of 28,800vph and offers a power reserve of 38 hours. The Sub 200 Whitepearl comes with a choice of Doxa’s classic stainless steel ‘beads-of-rice’ bracelet or a textured white rubber strap that promises to be supple and comfortable to wear.
