In the current market scene, there is no denying that collaborations play a powerful role in a brand’s marketing strategy. From the brand to the partner they work with, collaborations have entered every industry, proving advantageous for all stakeholders in the partnerships. Like the many products birthed from well thought-through collaborations, the watch industry has also embarked on a new journey of collaborations and partnerships. From TAG Heuer’s partnership with Alec Monopoly to the Bulgari X Tadao Ando editions, the watch industry boasts a rich tradition of collaboration. Following in the same footsteps are Louis Erard and their vast range of collaborative timepieces. Here is a quick overview and some details on a few highlights.
Louis Erard’s Multiple Collaborative Efforts
Offering an eclectic collection of massive limited-edition collaborations, Louis Erard and their many partners have come together to blend the fabulous art of watchmaking with different cultures, design aesthetics and creative outlooks. Each brand, personality or organisation that has partnered with Louis Erard share some core values of mechanical excellence, authenticity, and a mutual love for creativity. “Brand equity is built on different levels. And when you’re a small independent, you don’t have large marketing budgets. Products have to market the brand—they have to be provocative in a positive sense, to encourage confidence in them as an investment.” says Manuel Emch, delegate board member at Louis Erard.
Louis Erard first started their collaborative efforts with the relaunch of the 2019 Louis Erard Excellence Regulator, redesigned by the talented Eric Giroud. It also made a move to join hands with the legendary football club, Leeds United FC to celebrate 100 years of the club with a premium limited edition timepiece.
Since then, Louis Erard have not looked back when it comes to collaborations. From beginning their now longstanding partnership with architect and designer Alain Silberstein, to their recent collaborative efforts with Konstantin Chaykin, Louis Erard have made a mark in the world of watch collaborations. It is important to note that most of the watches developed under any collaboration are limited to 178 pieces. This number symbolises the brand’s principle of “together we are always stronger” and also represents the leitmotif of the brand.
Here are some noteworthy collaborative timepieces.
Louis Erard X Konstantin Chaykin
Kicking off the list is Louis Erard’s collaboration with master watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin, to create the quirky Le Régulateur Louis Erard X Konstantin Chaykin timepiece. This unique, dare we say strange, piece of horology features a one-eyed monster brought to life with the intricate mechanics of the watch. With the hour marker represented via a single, large, round eye, this cyclopean timepiece is deeply inspired by the evil eye of Slavic tales called Likho. As Chaykin explains, “Every Halloween I created a new type of monster, ie wristwatches with a Halloween theme, such as the pumpkin head watch and the Dracula watch, for example. Looking for ideas for this story, I turned to the one-eyed Likho character from fairy tales.”
The collaboration has birthed two colour variations in limited editions of 178 pieces, along with a diptych box set that is limited to 28 pieces.
Louis Erard X Alain Silberstein
Since their first collaboration back in 2019, Louis Erard and Alain Silberstein (a French interior-architect-turned-watch-designer) are two inseparable names. From their first partnership in creating two Le Régulateur Louis Erard X Alain Silberstein editions that were instantly a collector’s item to the many editions that have come after, both brands have emerged victorious in bringing their separate worlds together.
The recent fusion has led to the creation of the new diptych featuring two new editions: Le Régulateur Louis Erard X Alain Silberstein Blanc and La Semaine Louis Erard X Alain Silberstein Blanche. Limited to 178 pieces, the two mechanical watches house a regulator, an original complication from Louis Erard and an Alain Silberstein emblematic smiley weekly calendar.
Louis Erard X seconde/seconde/
Following up on their exciting collaborative efforts, Louis Erard added the rising star of ultimate customisation, seconde/seconde/—aka Romaric André—to their long list of collaborators. The independent Paris-based creator has worked with the brand to create two extraordinary and emblematic timepieces—the Le Régulateur Louis Erard x seconde/seconde/ of 2021 and La Petite Seconde Louis Horror x seconde/seconde/ of 2022.
In terms of design, the former inserts the internet at the heart of the watch mechanism with the dreaded ‘404 Error’ reinterpreted as a minute hand. The latter honours Halloween and features a hint of a ghost present on the seconds hand, which turns while being trapped within the dungeon-round sub-dial.
Louis Erard X Label Noir
Perfectly personifying the meeting of two brands, the Louis Erard X Label Noir collaboration results in the creation of the Le Régulateur Louis Erard X Label Noir. Being at the forefront of customisation for more than ten years, Label Noir reinterpret the Louis Erard timepiece with a green and black colour theme. The use of green hues symbolises the last ray that the sun sends over the earth before hiding behind the horizon. This green spark works beautifully against the rich black tones of the timepiece.
A direct result of teamwork, constant dialogue, continuous back and forth of proposals with different iterations, the timepiece is a beacon for the merging of two different worlds, each brand reflected to its core.
Louis Erard X Massena LAB
What happens when a creative horological studio joins hands with a watch brand well known for its mighty mechanical excellence? The result is the birth of extraordinary timepieces like the Le Régulateur Louis Erard X Massena LAB Gold and Silver pieces. Offering an irresistible combination of Antide Janvier (a legendary clockmaker) and 19th century marine chronometry, the two editions are limited to 178 pieces each. The only difference between the gold and silver edition is in the dial, the former features a lower place made of 2N gold while the latter is rhodium-plated.
Louis Erard X atelier oï
For this collaboration, Louis Erard chose the theme of architecture and design by partnering with atelier oï, a regional design company, to bring out the radiant Le Régulateur Louis Erard X atelier oï. Presented with an original dial and representative of the emblematic regulator symbol of the maison, the timepiece is the result of two regional companies coming together to create magic that spreads across the globe.
Taking a leave from the rather strict field of watchmaking, the Le Régulateur Louis Erard X atelier oï offers an aesthetic look created by experts in architecture and design. The all-silver dial with hints of blue radiates from the centre outwards, reminiscent of the shape of a sundial. The dial of the watch is a pure work of art which, to be frank, does not even need the Louis Erard logo.
