There’s something stunning about bronze watches. It could be the muted sheen that suggests durability and resilience. Perhaps it is the fact that the passage of time gives the timepiece a whole new look. Bronze, one of the earliest alloys known to humans, has a unique place in the world of timekeeping. Maurice Lacroix are among those brands that give the material the respect it deserves, having revitalised bronze watches in a way that makes them relevant. Their latest release is the Aikon Automatic Bronze, which features a gorgeous chocolate fumé gradient dial, decorated in a clous de Paris motif, that highlights the chiselled and clawed case in a beautifully monochromatic way. Paired with an integrated, vintage, brown leather strap, the timepiece exudes a cool elegance that befits the Aikon line’s urban-inspired aesthetic.
The Muted Metallic Lustre Of The Aikon Automatic Bronze
Set in a 42mm brushed bronze case with a height of only 11mm, the Aikon Automatic Bronze timepiece features an angular crown at three, and the collection’s signature clawed bezel. Here, the claws stand out for their sand-blasted treatment, reflecting light beautifully off the chiselled profile of the timepiece. With its water resistance rating of up to 200m, the Aikon Automatic Bronze can withstand more than the odd splash that is inevitable with everyday use. An open caseback displays the automatic ML 115 calibre that powers the watch, with timekeeping and date functions, and a power reserve of 38 hours. Based on the SW200 movement and created in collaboration with Swiss movement manufacturer Sellita, the rotor on the caseback features the Maurice Lacroix ‘M’ logo prominently.
The Brown Fumé Dial Of The Aikon Automatic Bronze
While Maurice Lacroix have released some stunning bronze timepieces in the past, this is the first time they have paired bronze with a chocolate-hued fumé dial that darkens to a deep brown around the periphery. The clous de Paris motif—which has become a sort of signature for the Aikon Automatic—forms the base for the shades of chocolate, its depth enhanced considerably by the shaded effect on the watch face. Slim, stick indexes and timekeeping hands in 4N gold stand out against the brown, all filled with Super-LumiNova for clearer legibility in darkened conditions. A date window at three o’clock features a gold outline, with numerals displayed against a white background.
The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic Bronze is a watch that fits right into just about any setting. Its tough bronze case displays an adventurous quality, while the beautiful textured chocolate dial with gold highlights gives off a more restrained and formal vibe. In keeping with the Aikon line’s urban inspiration, this makes a very agreeable daily-wear timepiece.
