Traditionally, sports watches are known to carry a bulky framework with generous proportions that vouch for their durability. However, trust German watchmaker Nomos to bend the rules when it comes to crafting timepieces under this category. The independent brand known to be a flagbearer of minimalism—a design aesthetic found in all their watches—firmly believe in the Bauhaus style, where ‘form follows function and less is always more’. This is also applicable to their new launch—the Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date Atlantic—a sporty, understated, and elegant offering, perfect for all wrist sizes.
This mid-size round watch joins the Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date ‘Sky’ and ‘Sand’ versions, launched last year. It stands out for its blue ‘Atlantic’ dial—a shade of blue, as deep as the ocean waters. This also establishes its link with the dive watch segment, since it offers a water resistance of up to 200m, indicated by a ‘whale’ motif engraving—apt for those underwater adventures. The watch comes in a 38.5mm stainless-steel case, measuring less than 10mm in height and is available in two versions—reference 528 (with an open sapphire crystal caseback), and reference 518 (with a solid stainless-steel caseback), held firmly in place by six screws. It also features a screw-down crown with a red warning ring to alert the wearer when it is not fully screwed in.
With its maritime design codes, the Neomatik 38 Date Atlantic, has an all-round appeal with a deep blue dial and a matching date-display aperture at three o’clock. The clean dial offers perfect legibility as it showcases a strong contrast of the white numerals, indexes, and large hands, balanced by a small seconds sub-dial at six o’clock, distinguished by a red hand. The yellow hour markers also provide the much-needed powerful colour accents, and together with the hands, numerals, and indexes, glow in the dark or low-light conditions.
This dive timer is driven by the patented in-house automatic calibre DUW 6101—upgraded and specially adapted to this mid-size case to deliver high performance. With a diameter of 33mm and a height of 3.6mm, this mechanism is replete with 42 jewels and beats at a frequency of 21,600vph to supply a power reserve of at least 42 hours.
It has a quick-set date function, which can be used to set it easily in both directions: forward or backwards, a bi-directional winding rotor, and is equipped with the Nomos swing system—a proprietary escapement developed and built in-house, denoted by its tempered blue balance spring, and other elements such as the three-quarter plate, ribbing polish, and tempered screws. This timekeeper is presented on a textile dark blue strap—complementing the overall look of this everyday sports watch.
