The words ‘sand’ and ‘sky’ together conjure up a holiday mood of sandy beaches, where the horizon meets the sky. German watchmakers Nomos Glashütte capture this essence with their minimalistic Bauhaus-inspired design vocabulary, via two new dials in their Ahoi line, the Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date Sky and Sand.
New Bauhaus Style Ahoi Neomatik 38 In Blue And Yellow
Previous Ahoi Neomatik Atlantic and Date timepieces feature 36mm to 40mm case sizes, offer 200m of water resistance, and an optional date aperture. The new Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date versions have 38.5mm stainless steel round cases, measuring 9.8mm in thickness. Here, the colours set the mood. The pastel blue is indicative of clear, summer skies, and even deep seas, and swimming pools, while the muted golden dial encapsulates warm summers, outdoor sports, and laidback champagne brunches.
In their own way, the Ahoi Neomatik Date versions try to play with minimalism. The hour markers alternate between Arabic numerals and stick indices. Further, the rhodium-plated hour and minute hands plus the indicators for the hour markers are inlaid with white Super-LumiNova to offer legibility in poorly lit areas. There’s a date window featured at three o’clock, and a small seconds sub-dial at six o’clock. This sub-dial brings some drama to break the minimalist theme, featuring hairline concentric circles within the counter and a fiery orange small seconds hand that is redolent of glowing sunsets.
The Dramatic Caseback Of The Ahoi Neomatik
The open-worked caseback offers a peek of the new date calibre DUW 6101 automatic movement from Deutsche Uhrenwerke Nomos Glashütte that powers the Ahoi Neomatik models, with their patented quick-change date function. Providing assistance to wind the movement is the screw-down crown, secured by the angular crown guard. Visible through the caseback is the Glashütte three-quarter plate, proprietary escapement known as the Nomos ‘swing system’, bidirectional winding rotor, and balance bridge. Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating covers the dial and the screwed in caseback. A tiny whale is engraved next to the 200m water resistance.
The Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date is paired with tailor-made, woven textile straps, crafted in France. These straps are especially resistant to seawater. The blue model features a dark grey strap, while the muted golden model is attached to a light grey one. Both straps are fitted with winged clasps.
