As official timekeeper of the America’s Cup yacht race, Omega release the Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ edition, their tribute to reigning regatta champions Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ). The dive watch features the colours of the Auckland-based team, as well as the country’s fern logo in a gorgeous shade of turquoise. The stunning matt-black ceramic dial with turquoise highlights, displays a regatta countdown timer, and an ‘Auld Mug’ trophy on the central chronograph hand. “Our race-ready watch looks as good as it performs and is a fitting tribute to the talented crew and the country they represent,” says Omega president Raynald Aeschlimann.
Planning Ahead: Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition
Among the oldest international sporting events in the world, the America’s Cup, which is held every few years at various locations around the world, will take place in Barcelona’s waters in 2024. Omega have timed the last three events in 2000, 2003 and 2021, with special commemorative watches released for each. Why release the watch a year ahead, you ask? Well, that’s because the preliminary regatta started in the Spanish coastal city of Vilanova last week. “Much like our friends from Emirates Team New Zealand, a year races by fast, so the time is right to show our true colours,” explains Aeschlimann.
Sporting Hues Of The Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition
And what gorgeous colours these are—New Zealand’s black may actually be the best palette for not just the liveries but also a watch. The black ceramic case of the Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ edition is sized at a robust 45.5mm, and offers a depth resistant of 600m. White engraved markings stand out on the brushed, black ceramic unidirectional rotating dive bezel, with a triangle at 12 and a luminous green dot within. The dial, also in a matt black ceramic, features a minute track in a contrasting turquoise and a gorgeous turquoise central chronograph hand with a miniature ‘Auld Mug’ trophy—as the oldest prize in the international sporting world is referred to—as a counterweight.
At three o’clock is the special regatta countdown timer, marked at five-minute intervals with a flagged start. This sub-dial stands out for its turquoise ring and matching lume-filled indicator. A running seconds sub-dial at nine o’clock balances the watch face. Applied rhodium indexes and arrow-shaped hands are filled with Super-LumiNova, and the date window is nestled at six o’clock. Other turquoise elements on the dial include the applied Arabic numeral 12, the word ‘Seamaster’ and the water resistance rating of the watch. Turquoise rings on brushed black ceramic pushers, and the ‘He’ chemical symbol on the helium escape valve at 10 o’clock, stand out against the black of the watch.
The watch is paired with a structured rubber strap in black or turquoise, with turquoise stitching, and comes along with an additional rubber strap and two NATO straps in matching colours. The presentation box also features turquoise highlights.
The Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition’s Special Nod
On the Naiad lock caseback is another tribute to the reigning champions—the Emirates Team New Zealand logo stands out in white, with the kiwis’ sporting fern logo in turquoise against the black of the caseback. Behind this beautiful commemorative caseback, powering the watch, is Omega’s Metas-certified master chronometer calibre 9900.
The stunning Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ edition in black and turquoise is undoubtedly Omega’s most special tribute timepiece for the America’s Cup, and most certainly a beautiful collectible.
