Anniversaries are momentous occasions for brands to showcase their expertise of time-honoured traditions, which have helped them establish a distinct identity in order to stand out from the crowd. So, it comes as no surprise that Oris have launched a new limited-edition version of their famed Divers Sixty-Five watch in a full black-on-black aesthetic—a first for the Swiss luxury watchmaker—to commemorate their 120th anniversary. Founded in the Swiss village of Hölstein in 1904, the independent brand has made an indelible mark in the haute horlogerie world by producing mechanical timepieces using the most advanced techniques and processes, thereby keeping up with the times without any compromise on quality to create offerings at highly competitive prices.
The new Oris Hölstein Edition 2024 also follows the same philosophy and comes in a limited-edition of 250 pieces only. This is the first full black-on-black watch that the brand has ever made, and is also imbued with the brand’s ‘Joy of Mechanics’ DNA. Based on their retro sports watch—the Divers Sixty-Five, this striking timekeeper comes in a 40mm stainless-steel case, where the bezel and crown are plated in black DLC (diamond-like carbon). The hands, hour markers, dial text, date wheel and lume are all in black, too, and the watch is set on a black rubber strap with a black-DLC-plated buckle. Here, the caseback is also plated in black DLC, and is engraved with the limited-edition number and the Oris Bear, offering a water resistance of up to 100m. This all-black aesthetic imparts an understated yet a very powerful look to the timepiece that makes quite an impact on the wrist.
“We just thought it would be fun and a great way to celebrate our birthday. It’s a watch we might not do otherwise. In the end, it looks sleek, it tells some of our backstory through a design linked to 1965, and yet its colourway makes it contemporary, too. And it’s the first time you see the Oris Bear in swim trunks,” says Oris Co-CEO Rolf Studer in an official statement.
This is also the first time that the brand has paired a regular bezel with a minutes scale (rather than a 12-hour scale) on a Divers Sixty-Five watch, equipped with the in-house Calibre 400. This means the watch has a generous five-day power reserve, enhanced levels of resistance to everyday anti-magnetism, and it comes with a 10-year warranty for users who register the watch at MyOris.
This is the fifth Hölstein edition that Oris have produced to mark the company’s birthday, and also gives them an opportunity to showcase that they take their work quite seriously. “It’s a bit of fun and captures an important idea: you don’t need a mechanical watch to survive, you need it to live. These special-edition pieces that we make once a year are hyper-realisations of our independent, joyful attitude. And I think that’s why our customers love them,” Studer explains and says that the watch is for everyone. “There’s no waiting list. You don’t have to be a special customer who’s bought loads of Oris watches before. You don’t have to travel thousands of kilometres to get to a special event. You don’t need to be friends with the right people. You just have to be quick,” he further elaborates.
The Hölstein Edition 2024 will be available at all Oris boutiques and on the official website, and can also be ordered through authorised brand dealers.
