Italian luxury watchmaker Panerai raise the bar once again with a compact, more wearable version of their popular Luminor Due collection, with a lunar twist. First introduced in 2016, the Luminor Due timepieces were robust, sporty and bold, measuring 44mm to 47mm in diameter (and even a massive 50mm moon phase model). The new Luminor Due Luna 38mm timepieces have a more elegant feel, owing to their smaller size, and are suited to just about any wrist.
Is It Gold, Is It Copper? It’s Goldtech
In a departure from their large case sizes, but in keeping with Panerai’s masculine aesthetic, the Luminor Due Luna 38mm series is set to target women, or men with smaller wrists. This collection is as close to a dress watch as Panerai get, with design elements that combine a moon phase complication in a smaller dial size, while also retaining their brand’s DNA.
The new moon phase iterations come in 38mm casings, with one Goldtech (Panerai’s rose-gold alloy) version, and three steel variants. Interestingly, only the former allows the user to see the movement through the display caseback, while the other editions have solid steel casebacks. When paired with the brand’s ‘Safety Lock’ crown, the cases are water-resistant up to 30m.
Unlike traditional gold, Panerai’s Goldtech contains a component of copper, giving it a rich rose-gold colour. The alloy also contains platinum, which prevents the material from oxidising, and offers a longer lifespan to the timepiece. Unlike standard rose-gold casings, Goldtech’s unmistakable intensity gives it a more modern aspect. The Due Luna model set in a Goldtech case, the PAM01181, features a mother-of-pearl dial and is delivered on a blue alligator strap with a Goldtech pin buckle.
Lume Shines Through The Dial
The three variants set in steel have sun-brushed sandwiched dials, one in blue and the other two in white. The numbers and indexes—coloured in a beige Super-LumiNova on the white dials and white on the blue version—are on the bottom layer of the sandwich dial, while the top layer has a stencil effect that allows the luminescence to shine through, revealing the indexes.
The PAM01180 has a striking style with its white dial offset by a dark pink alligator strap, while the PAM01301 is delivered on a Luminor Due steel bracelet that matches the crown-protection device. The third steel model, the PAM01179, completes the line with its sun-brushed blue sandwich dial, with a matching blue alligator strap, giving the watch a monochrome aesthetic, suitable for everyday use.
Gold Moon In A Starry Sky
These timepieces feature a moon phase complication at three o’clock, with a rotating disc that houses a 24-carat moon, set against a starry midnight sky, mirroring the small seconds sub-dial at nine o’clock. In all four timepieces, the word ‘Luna’—Italian for ‘the moon’—appears at six o’clock. Gold-toned hands and hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova to provide exceptional visibility in low-light conditions. The dial is covered with a corundum sapphire crystal, and the back is polished stainless steel for the steel timepieces. The side of the crown features Panerai’s signature protective bridge that adds to the edgy design of the timepiece.
The timepieces come with an easy-change band mechanism, that allows the wearer to replace the straps without using any tools. Panerai provides Luminor Due satin straps, which are essentially leather straps which look and feel like satin, in addition to alligator bands in various colours, to expand the possibilities for the wearability of the Luminor Due series.
Sturdy, Durable, Automatic, Small
These wristwatches are powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, with up to 72-hours of power reserve that eliminates the need for manual winding. Made to last with high-quality materials and a sturdy construction, these novelties can withstand daily wear and tear. All four versions run on the brand’s in-house P.900/MP calibre, a flat movement at just 5.9mm tall, with hours, minutes, seconds, and a moon phase module.
The Panerai Luminor Due Luna 38mm watches are a fantastic addition to the brand’s repertoire. They offer a new moon phase complication, which is both highly accurate and easy to adjust. The dial size makes it an excellent alternative for people who like a more compact watch with a reliable movement within, and the stainless steel case ensures durability and corrosion resistance, with the option to choose various dial and strap colour options to personalise these timepieces. If you’re looking for a new formal timepiece with an attitude, the Luminor Duo Luna is a great option.
