ReviewRazor’s Edge: Bulgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic

After three years of ardent development, Bulgari has unveiled the Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic. Allow us to acquaint you with the thinnest mechanical chronograph in the world

May We Recommend

Seemingly in competition with itself, Bulgari has made itself synonymous with extreme innovation in the world of fine watchmaking and ultra-thin timepieces. What we see before us is another record-breaking watch in the Octo Finissimo line. It was in 2014 that Bulgari was initiated into the world of ultra-thin watches, with the ground-shattering Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, followed by an ultra-thin minute repeater two years later. The year after, Bulgari debuted the Octo Finissimo Automatic before going four-for-four with last year’s Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic. Now, with the Chronograph GMT Automatic, the brand has rewritten the rules of contemporary watches again, taking home a fifth world record for the thinnest ever mechanical chronograph in watchmaking history.

Bulgari Octo Finissimo
Taking home, for the fifth time, a world record for the thinnest ever mechanical chronograph is the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic

The signature octagonal case of this Octo is crafted from brushed titanium, with a titanium dial and bracelet to match. Trying to comprehend the thickness (or lack thereof) of this 6.9mm watch becomes increasingly difficult when you learn that the movement within measures a paper-thin 3.3mm. What’s astounding is that, apart from its time-telling function, there’s also a chronograph and a GMT complication to go with it. At the nine o’clock position is the GMT function pusher, which activates the jumping hour mechanism, while in the sub-dial at three o’clock, the home time is indicated in the 24-hour format.

Its extremely light construction barely tips the scales at less than 85g. And that, paired with the watch’s sleek profile, will have you looking at your wrist to make sure the watch is still there! The Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic measures 42mm edge to edge. Within the angular case of this watch, the titanium dial uses minimal typography and well-defined markers, giving it an uncluttered aesthetic.

In a world where records are set and broken every day, the virtuosos at Bulgari have managed to set phenomenal benchmarks in watchmaking a whopping five times already. Now the question remains: is it possible to go any thinner? We’ll just have to wait and see what Bulgari does next.
