Of late, luxury watchmakers have been pursuing the path of attaining high or ultra luminosity for their timepieces. This is evident with IWC launching a concept watch showcasing the Ceralume technology—where the entire watch, including the strap glows in the dark. Last year, even Bell & Ross had flirted with the ‘luminous’ idea with the launch of the BR-X5 Green Lum watch, featuring an LM3D photo-luminescent composite case, emitting a bright green glow in the dark. And now, Ressence have jumped on the ‘lit’ bandwagon with their Type 5 L or ‘Luminova’—a gleaming new offering imbued with the brand’s DNA of telling time without any hands. The ‘L’ here, stands for luminous (no points for guessing that)… and the timepiece shines in all its glory, living up to its name.
“This new beamer and latest addition to our line of mechanical watches is as much a tool watch as a conversation starter, thanks to its superior legibility and unique design.” says Benoît Mintiens, founder, Ressence. “It’s not just about functionality; the robust Type 5 L brings a sense of quiet assurance and singularity to its wearer, making it a true companion for any endeavour,” he explains in the brand’s official press statement.
This timekeeper comes in a 46mm grade-5 titanium round case, which makes its ultralight on the wrist despite featuring two separate sealed chambers with the upper one filled with 3.75 ml of oil. It also features a unidirectional rotating bezel and a double-domed sapphire crystal on top and bottom with anti-reflective coating inside. This framework offers a water resistance of up to 100m.
The dial is convex and also comes in grade-5 titanium and showcases three bi-axial counters which look like satellites on the watch face, inclined at 3° (hours), 4.75° (thermal gauge and runner). And this is the playground where the magic happens! The indications and the entire dial is filled with green Grade-A Super-LumiNova, which enables it to emit the strong beam in low-light areas, including when the watch is strapped on to your wrist while diving. This is also when the rotating bezel comes in handy with its easy-to-grip tactile design allows for precise and reliable adjustments when calculating immersion time.
The Type 5 L is presented on a grey fabric strap with yellow leather lining fitted with an ardillon buckle.
Here are some salient features of the new watch:
Oil-Filled For Optimal Legibility
The luminous enhancement of the Type 5 L is paired to the Ressence oil-filled upper chamber, a hallmark of every Type 5 watch. The oil cancels out light refraction and makes it readable from any angle, providing a clear and crisp display that is essential for divers. The extra luminescent dial only further boosts this legibility.
Meeting Diver’s Watch Standards
The Type 5 L meets the rigorous ISO 6425 standard required for underwater exploration, adhering to the highest levels of safety and reliability. Apart from being water-resistant to 100m, it also passed tests of magnetic and shock resilience, among others.
Precision Bezel And Secure Lock System
The Type 5 L comes with a unidirectional rotating bezel with an easy-to-grip tactile design, allowing for precise and reliable adjustments. This is a critical feature for divers who rely on their watch to track immersion time accurately. Additionally, every Type 5 caseback deploys the Ressence Compression Lock System (RCLS), a mechanism which enables wearers to lock the compression gasket for waterproofing.
