The Watch Guide Brings You Our Favourite Timepieces From The 2016 Oscars Red Carpet
May We Recommend
The awards season has come and gone, and while everybody was anticipating Leo’s long overdue win, scrutinizing who wore what at the Oscars (with the fashion police showing no mercy), and debating over the wins, we at The Watch Guide had our eyes focused on the wrists of the stars waltzing down the red carpet. The wrist is where our heart lies. Watch-spotting our way to glory, here are our favourite (choosing was a nightmare!) pieces of Haute Horlogerie worn on the biggest night of Cinema. Read on to find out what we thought were the six best watches from the Oscars 2016.
1. Charming Eddie Redmayne wears an Omega Globemaster
Perfectly charming, Eddie Redmayne looked dapper in an Omega Globemaster. No surprises here, as Redmayne is a brand ambassador of Omega! Why this was our numero uno pick? A meticulously tested mechanical timepiece, the Omega Constellation Globemaster is the perfect combination of style and functionality. Calling itself a Master Chronometer, Omega has reached new heights of fine watchmaking. The watch is tested and certified by COSC and also by a new eight-stage testing program that has been developed by Omega specifically for the Globemaster. A spectacularly revolutionary watch that was born to stun the world, made quite an impact at the Oscars Red Carpet too!
Editor’s Pick: Omega Constellation Globemaster
The Omega Constellation Globemaster (130.33.39.21.02.001) is a watch that will last a lifetime. It has a stainless steel case that features a hard metal scratchproof fluted bezel with a Constellation star above the date display window at 6 o’clock. With a Central Observatory medallion case back, the sun-brushed blue “Pie Pan” dial largely resonates the first 1952 Constellation model. Driven by the Calibre 8900 self-winding movement with a co-axial escapement, the watch has a power reserve of up to 60 hours with the magnetic fields resistance reaching 15,000 gauss. 2. Jared Leto aka The Joker goes bling-a-ling!
Ever since his Oscar win for playing a “drug-addicted transgender woman with AIDS” in the critically acclaimed movie Dallas Buyer’s Club, Jared Leto has experimented with his looks time and again. His upcoming movie Suicide Squad also involves him transforming into Batman’s nemesis, The Joker. For the biggest night in Hollywood, the shape-shifting actor sports the sleek and glossy Bvlgari Octo Finissimo with a diamond encrusted bezel. The ultra-thin watch with a predominantly square shape is perfect for someone looking for contemporary timepieces with minimalistic design preferences.
Editor’s Pick: Bvlgari Octo
Our editor’s pick from Bvlgari is the Bvlgari Octo (BGOP41BGLD) . Like the Octo Finissimo, it embodies the trademark octagonal shape which has been inspired from the Basilica of Massentius in Rome. The oddly-shaped case structure is clean, polished with brushed finishes. With a mechanical manufacture movement, the automatic winding BVL 193 caliber is decorated with perlage, côtes de Genève and anglage finishing. The 41mm, 18kt pink gold case has a transparent case back with a water resistance of up to 100m. The lacquered dial further adds to the overall charming personality of the watch.
3. Mr. Funny Man – Steve Carell, makes a smart choice with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra-Thin Perpetual
Steve Carell played it smart by sporting a watch that had a perpetual calendar complication, given the fact, that the Oscars were held on February 28th, 2016! The watch with this particular complication was a well-thought addition to Mr. Carell’s Oscar red carpet attire. Kudos to him for that! Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra-Thin Perpetual is a casual watch housing a very complex complication. Dressy in feel and look, the 39mm stainless steel watch is ultra-thin with just a 9.2mm thickness. Extremely wearable, it has a display case back and alligator leather straps. Sitting perfectly balanced on the wrist, the slim profile of the watch makes for an elegant addition for an evening of glitz and glamour.
Editor’s Pick: Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Calendar
A fascinating timepiece, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Calendar is a beautiful watch with a 39mm case and silvered sun-brushed dial. Giving a modern twist to the 1950s design, the Master Calendar like the Ultra-thin Perpetual is seamlessly sleek and well-tailored. Sitting perfectly well on your wrist, the thin case evokes an elegant aura with a casual character, befitting many formal social occasions. The moon-phase aperture inculcated in the running seconds sub-dial at 6 o’ clock, is pleasantly in accordance with the overall white dial. One of its most interesting features is the date chapter ring around the outer circle of the dial and a hand indicator with a red “lunette” end. A watch with a wonderful wrist presence, the Jaeger LCoultre Master Calendar is an elegant watch with a balanced design and superior craftsmanship.
4. Bad Boy – Tom Hardy sports the iconic Bvlgari-Bvlgari Chronograph
Hardly took him time to stand out from the crowd with his three-piece suit and black aviators, but what caught our attention was what he was sporting on his wrist; the Bvlgari- Bvlgari Integrated Chronograph in an 18k pink gold case. The Bvlgari Chronograph is a classic watch with one of Bvlgari’s most iconic designs. The double branding on the bezel is unique and definitely stands out. Add to that the 18k rose gold case and you have a watch crazy enough to sit comfortably on the wrist of Mad Max!
Editor’s pick: Bvlgari Diagono
The word Diagono comes from the Ancient Greek root “agon” which means a contest or a competition. A suitable pick for the biggest award ceremony in the world of cinema we reckon! The Diagono Ultranero Chronograph in red gold features a 42mm round steel case with a black DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) surface treatment with the bezel crafted in solid red gold. Powered by an in-house self-winding CalibreB130 movement, the watch guarantees a power reserve of up to 42 hours.
5. Looking like a million bucks, Dev Patel flaunts the IWC Portugieser
IWC is synonymous with understated, classic timepieces and the watch worn by Dev Patel for the 88th Academy Awards this year was no exception. The British actor who shot to fame with the critically acclaimed film Slumdog Millionaire, looked dashing with the IWC Portugieser Automatic sitting perfectly on his wrist. The white dial in contrast to the leather strap was in perfect accordance with Dev’s tux for the night. A big, bold and classic timepiece for the Biggest Night in Cinema, the IWC Portugieser Automatic was easily recognizable on the red carpet.
Editor’s Pick: Portugieser Annual Calendar
Boasting an impressive design, powered by a striking new movement, the IWC Portugieser Annual Calendar is a watch that does not fail to impress. Aesthetically beautiful like all IWC watches, the IWC Portugieser Annual Calendar is technically astounding too. Featuring a new movement; the IWC in-house Caliber 52850, it not only features an annual calendar but includes a new rotor design, a whopping power reserve of 168 hours (7days) with subsidiary sub-dials and a power reserve indicator on the dial. If you are not a big fan of the perpetual calendar complication and find the date display function a bit too simple, you will surely find this watch more akin to your needs. The traditional midnight blue dial enhances the overall charm of the watch. Simple, elegant and truly classic, the IWC Portugieser Annual Calendar is a spectacular addition to any collection.
6. Perfectionist Micheal Fassbender’s perfect choice: the Chopard L.U.C XPS
Playing the charismatic genius Steve Jobs in the movie Steve Jobs, Fassbender stayed true to his reel-life character and arrived at the Oscar Red Carpet with the usual charm and charisma. His black tuxedo was in perfect contrast with the Chopard LUC XPS that he was flaunting on his wrist. Chopard is a well-known black-tie event preference with simple aesthetics and classy looks. The dauphine hands set against the backdrop of an ivory dial sets the watch apart in terms of elegance and class. Smart, cool, simple and elegant, Chopard L.U.C XPS embodies the reel and real life character of Micheal Fassbender. There couldn’t have been a better watch.
Editor’s Pick: Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Power Control
Finding a true macho watch from Chopard is a bit of a long shot, but the Mille Miglia GTS Power Control is an exception. A sporty watch to the core, the Mille Miglia is an attractive watch with the popular red and black colour combination. Bearing all hallmarks of a true Chopard, the Mille Miglia GTS Power Control is powered by the self-winding Chopard Calibre 01.08-C movement that boasts of a 60-hour power reserve. The black matt dial is interesting with luminescent hands and hour-markers. The fuel gauge-style power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock enhances the sporty attitude of the watch. The combination of black, white and red tones make it a stand-out timepiece.
