Since 2021, when TAG Heuer announced their partnership with motorcar manufacturer Porsche, the Swiss watchmakers have released a number of collaborative timepieces, each more striking than the last. With the latest Carrera Chronograph X Porsche 963, the partnership between watch brand and race car makers displays an evolution into a new entity where design nuances from both brands form an integrated timepiece. This is the first time TAG Heuer have released a Porsche collaboration timepiece with a skeleton dial featuring bridges that evoke the chassis, or metal framework, of the Porsche 963. Distinct nuances inspired by the race car make this collaboration more meaningful, such as the black, white and racing red colour scheme, or the forged carbon bezel that makes the watch lightweight, also enhancing its ergonomics. With each new Carrera Chronograph X Porsche release, the collaboration between the two brands makes more sense as they integrate their design codes into one stunning timepiece after another.
TAG Heuer X Porsche: A Meaningful Partnership
TAG Heuer and Porsche have a shared racing history that goes beyond the name ‘Carrera’, whose inspiration for both brands came from the Carrera Panamericana race through Mexico that ended in the 1950s. TAG Heuer have released multiple collaborative timepieces since they first partnered with Porsche, beginning with the black timepiece that was unveiled with the announcement in 2021. This partnership has since grown into an integrated entity where one brand’s design influence is practically indistinguishable from the other’s.
The Carrera Chronograph X Porsche 963, Inside And Out
The robust 44mm steel case of the Carrera Chronograph X Porsche 963, with a water resistance rating of 100m, features brushed and polished finishes with an angular, hollowed-out side that displays the Porsche logo. A forged carbon bezel displays the tachymeter, where a lume-filled Porsche logo sits at two o’clock against grey markings. At three is a blackened steel crown, and two pushers at the two and four o’clock positions feature a similar black DLC finish.
The dial is protected by sapphire crystal, as is the exhibition caseback that displays TAG Heuer’s TH20-00 automatic calibre. Through the caseback one can see the oscillating weight, designed to evoke the steering wheel of a Porsche, with names of both brands printed in red. Also in red is the chronograph’s column wheel displayed at 12 o’clock through the caseback.
The Evocative Framework Of The Open-Worked Carrera Chronograph X Porsche 963
On the black white and grey open-worked dial of the Carrera Chronograph X Porsche 963, accents in red stand out—a nod the race-car that inspired this timepiece. Dial bridges are reminiscent of the Porsche 963’s chassis, overlaid with chronograph counters in black with white markings and red accents. A black flange features the minute track interspersed with hour markers. Here, the marker at four o’clock is in red to symbolise the start of a race, a subtle nod to the brands’ shared racing history. A central chronograph hand stands out in red, as do hands on the 12-hour counter at nine o’clock and the 30-minute recorder at three, while a small seconds sub-dial sits discreetly at six with a grey hand. Within this small seconds sub-dial is a date window with a Super-LumiNova-coated date revealer. In the dark, this date window glows along with hour markers, markings on the chronograph counters and timekeeping hands, all similarly coated with lume. And the Porsche logo on the bezel, of course.
On the case, ‘963’ is engraved at six o’clock. Incidentally, this Carrera Chronograph X Porsche 963 is only available in a limited edition of 963 pieces. The watch is mounted on a rubber strap designed like the NACA ducts whose aerodynamic shape is used to improve efficiency and handling of race cars, and a nod to the design of many Porsche racing vehicles. It is subtle nuances like these that make the TAG Heuer X Porsche such a great partnership, integrating the two brands in a way that both motorsports and watch enthusiasts appreciate and admire. And this is what makes the TAG Heuer Carrrera Chronograph X Porsche 963, arguably, the coolest collaborative timepiece by the two brands that share so much history.
