The world’s largest century-old annual watch and jewellery fair, Baselworld 2018, which took place last week was pervaded with remarkable innovations and avant-garde new releases. In the realm of watches for men, we witnessed a few thrilling breakthroughs that are sure to be talking points throughout this year. With the launch of Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic, Bulgari reclaimed their leadership in the world of slender watches and set a world record for the fourth time. Another interesting horological advancement has been the launch of smartwatches by more than one major watchmaker. Talking about colours, bronze was the choice of metal and colour that reigned at Baselworld 2018 and the on-trend Oris Carl Brashear impressed many.
1. Breitling Navitimer 8 B01 – The New Face Of Breitling
A departure from the Navitimer 1, the new Breitling Navitimer 8 watches make a reference to the Huit Aviation Department, which was established in 1938 ‘to produce cockpit instruments as well as classic pilot’s watches for civilian and military use’. The new models are heavily influenced by the cockpit watches of the 30s, with no slide rule, and big bold Arabic numeral hour markers. This one here is the chronograph version in a 43mm steel case with a black leather strap. The contrast between the dial and sub-dials indicates that it runs on the Breitling manufacture movement – the automatic B01 calibre. With a sapphire crystal glass and caseback, this watch is water resistant to 100m.
2. Oris Carl Brashear – A Limited Edition Chronograph In Bronze
Bronze was the choice of metal and colour that reigned at Baselworld 2018 and Oris absolutely aced the trend. However, from all the bronze watches at the fair and from the brand’s own collection, at the top ought to be the Oris Carl Brashear, which also happens to be the successor of the brand’s previous diver’s timepiece that paid tribute to heroic US Navy master diver, Carl Brashear. The watch is limited to 2,000 pieces, available in a 43mm bronze case, and houses an automatic chronograph movement. The aesthetic appeal is accentuated by the blue curved dial that has applied rose gold-plated hour markers with SuperLuminova, also seen at zero on the 60-minute scale of the unidirectional rotating diver’s bezel. Water resistant to 100m, this watch comes with a brown leather strap. Oris has hit the bull’s eye in the diver’s watch category with the 2018 Carl Brashear.

4. Carl F. Bucherer Manero Tourbillon Double Peripheral – The Peripheral Evolves
The ‘double peripheral’ in the name of this Carl F. Bucherer timepiece is a reference to the fact that it not only runs on an automatic movement with the brand’s signature peripheral winding rotor, even the tourbillon seen at 12 o’clock is peripherally mounted. This prestigious complication makes its way into the Manero Peripheral movement and the way it seemingly floats in the skeleton display is stunning. Powered by the new T3000 calibre, this watch provides an unhindered view of the tourbillon regulator from above and below the cage. And it all fits into a 43mm rose gold case. To top that, the movement offers a whopping 65-hour power reserve.

5. Nomos Glashütte Autobahn – Limitless Excellence
Embodying idiosyncrasy and minimalist design, German watchmaker Nomos Glashütte has launched a few show-stealers at Baselworld 2018. In collaboration with German designer Werner Aisslinger, this relatively young brand unveiled the Autobahn collection, named after the German highway system that is devoid of a mandated speed limit. Available in three dial colours (white silver-plated, sports grey and midnight blue), it is hugely inspired by race tracks and automotive analogue dash counters, as is indicated by the curved rehaut in the centre of the watch.

The new Freelancer RW1212 skeleton watch reveals most of the movement with an intricate perlage finish and is stripped down to exhibit more than just the balance wheel. Running on the automatic-winding movement, this watch offers a 38-hour power reserve. This sophisticated timepiece comes in several versions, featuring a silver-toned or black dial paired with a steel case and bracelet, or with a leather strap, as well as in two-tone variations featuring matching bracelets or leather straps.
