May We Recommend
The perfect finale to a socially- and politically-charged awards season, the Oscars 2018 had strong speeches, satirical humour, and a large number of celebrities sporting ‘Time’s Up’ pins. Unlike the Golden Globe Awards and the BAFTAs earlier in the season, showing support towards the Time’s Up movement for women didn’t necessarily mean wearing black, However, the message was loud and clear, despite everyone’s sartorial choices at Hollywood’s biggest night. The watches that actors and actresses chose were of particular interest to us, as we saw a lot of gold, classical dress watches, but also more versatile styles and some chronograph timepieces too. Take a look at the watches seen on the red carpet and on stage, as we recommend similar styles for your wrists.
Daniel Kaluuya Chose IWC
The breakout star of the critically-acclaimed horror film, Get Out, Oscar nominee Daniel Kaluuya made an impression in his brown evening jacket and slacks, paired with patent leather shoes from TOD’S. To go with it, the actor wore an IWC chronograph watch in rose gold.
Our suggestion – IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar: Set in a generously-sized, 45mm case, this watch is powered by an automatic chronograph moment. Also housed in a rose gold case like Kaluuya’s watch, this timepiece offers brilliance in contrast, with its brown leather strap and grey sunray dial. This perpetual calendar features a large date and month indication at 10 and two, while the chronograph counters can be seen at 12 and six. Equipped with sapphire crystal glass, this piece is water resistant to 30m.
Timothée Chalamet Stayed Loyal To Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso
A popular favourite for best actor, which Gary Oldman eventually won, Chalamet made waves with his acclaimed performances in Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird. Aside from that, we’ve also had an eye on this Oscar nominee for the fact that he’s consistently worn Reverso watches at all his major appearances during this awards season. At the Oscars, he kept it classic in gold, and a dark dial to contrast his otherwise all-white ensemble.
Our suggestion – Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Ultra Thin 1931: This is a classic Reverso in a 27mm case, set with a manual-winding mechanical movement. The rectangular rose gold case comes with a muted brown leather strap and matching dial that features a small seconds sub-dial at six o’clock, quite like the Reverso that Chalamet chose. This timepiece comes with a sapphire crystal glass and is safe in water down to 30m.
Armie Hammer Wore Montblanc
The star of Oscar-winning film, Call Me By Your Name, Armie Hammer was recovering from an infection, but he made quite the appearance despite that. Looking dapper in a velvet tuxedo from Armani, Hammer chose to complement his bold jacket with a classical timepiece that balanced the look. The watch was an understated Montblanc in gold, with a silvered dial and a black leather strap.
Our suggestion – Montblanc 4810: To offer a refreshing change from all the gold seen above, we recommend a Montblanc 4810 in steel, but not without some glitter in the form of applied hour markers and central hour and minute hands in gold. This chronograph timepiece comes with an automatic movement set in a 43mm case, with a decorated, textured dial featuring 30-minute and 12-hour counters at 12 and six o’clock. Enhancing the distinctive appearance are the blued chronograph counter and central hands. With small seconds counter at nine o’clock and a date window at six, this watch is fitted with a black leather strap and is water resistant to 50m.
Nicole Kidman In Vintage Omega
A woman who always makes an impression with her sophisticated choices for every red carpet appearance, Nicole Kidman made a mark this year as well, wearing a Giorgio Armani number with a rich, blue sheen. Perfectly complementing this look was her vintage Omega jewellery timepiece from 1953. The Omega ambassador has access to the brand’s exclusive archives, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a statement jewellery watch from Omega for yourself.
Our suggestion – Omega Constellation jewellery: This delicate watch in a 24mm case is a jewelled interpretation of the iconic Constellation design. Set in white gold, this watch has a resplendent scattering of diamonds on its white mother-of-pearl dial and bezel, seemingly spilling out onto the distinctive Constellation bracelet in white gold. Despite its dainty appearance, this timepiece is durable with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 100m. If that doesn’t make it a perfect dress watch, what could!
