Arnold & Son have a peculiar way of presenting ordinary complications in extraordinary ways. So, when it came to perhaps the most poetic and romantic complication — the moon phase — the maison delivered “the largest rotating moon ever built into a wristwatch.” Subsequently, a feature earmarked to a small window became a tour de force with the 2021-launched Luna Magna. For context on just how big the size is, the three-dimensional moon on a Luna Magna watch measures an impressive 12mm in diameter! This, when combined with supreme Arnold & Son craftsmanship contrives a celestial reverie on the wrist.
Design
The Arnold & Son Luna Magna collection is home to elegant, haute horology timepieces that feature sophisticated, round cases elevated by tapered, curved lugs and a well-carved crown. The case, naturally sizeable, becomes the backdrop for beautiful dials, each designed to echo the beauty of the night sky. While the oversized 3D spherical moon phase indicator at six o'clock remains the main attraction on the dial, there is more. Ruthenium crystals, meteorites, stardust, Paraíba tourmaline, aventurine glass, and more decorations function as astronomical counterparts to the 3D moon, promising a dazzling vista of high-end watchmaking. In an act of balance, the main timekeeping dial indicating hours and minutes is positioned at noon and subtly connected to the moon aperture, forming an inverted eight.
Movement
Arnold & Son have developed an intricate hand-wound calibre A&S1021 for the Luna Magna collection. It has been meticulously designed to facilitate a seamless integration of the 3D spherical moon, which originates from the main plate. The regulating organ of the movement oscillates at a frequency of 21,000 beats per hour, and it offers a power reserve of 90 hours when fully wound. Additionally, the movement features a secondary moon phase display marking the moon's age. All of this and fine finishings are visible through the caseback. Arnold & Son's watchmaking prowess ensures precise astronomical functionality, guaranteeing correct celestial alignment for 122 years.
