Chronograph Watches

The term "chronograph" originates from the Greek words "chronos" which means "time" and "graph" which means "writing" or "recording. Chronograph watches are the epitome of elegance and functionality merged into a single timekeeping instrument. These timepieces go beyond simple timekeeping, offering the added functionality of measuring intervals of time through a stopwatch feature. They are known for their intricate design, featuring multiple subdials and pushers that set them apart from standard watches.

A Brief History of Chronograph Watches

The roots of chronograph watches can be traced back to the early 19th century when the concept was first introduced by Louis Moinet, a renowned French watchmaker. In 1816, Moinet designed the initial chronograph with a primary focus on its application in astronomical observations. This groundbreaking timepiece possessed exceptional precision, capable of measuring time down to an impressive 1/60th of a second. Recently, in 2012, this historical chronograph was rediscovered and now holds a distinguished place in the Guinness World Records.

How do Chronograph Watches work?

Whether your inclination leans towards simplicity or complexity, there is a chronograph watch that effortlessly suits your unique sensibilities.

1. Start the Chronograph

Most chronograph watches feature two pushers located on the right side of the case. To commence the chronograph function, a gentle press of the top pusher at the two o'clock position sets the mechanism in motion. As you engage with the pusher, the centre seconds hand, as well as the hands in the subdials start to move in order to measure elapsed time.

2. Stop the Chronograph

Stopping the chronograph watch is as simple as using the same top button at the 2 o'clock position.

3. Observing elapsed time

It is important to note that the chronograph's measurement of elapsed time is distinct from the primary time indication of the watch. The duration is typically recorded on dedicated subdials, each designed to capture a specific time increment. Depending on the watch's specifications, the chronograph function can measure intervals ranging from a generous 30 minutes to an impressive 12 hours. Reading the recorded hours, minutes, and seconds on these subdials grants a comprehensive view of the elapsed time.

4. Resetting the watch

To reset the chronograph and restore the hands to their initial positions, a simple press of the pusher at the four o'clock position is all that is required. This action restores the chronograph to its initial state, ready for the next timing event.
