About the IWC Da Vinci Collection
History
A fitting tribute to a legendary icon of innovation Leonardo Da Vinci, the IWC Schaffhausen Da Vinci collection was first launched in 1969. Equipped with the quartz Beta 21 movement, the collection was a lot different from today's Da Vinci. The 1969 timepiece featured a hexagonal case and steel bracelet. The modern Da Vinci took its shape in 1985 with the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. The timepiece featured a round case and was designed by Hano Burtscher, IWC's Chief Designer during the Quartz Crisis. The timepiece became an icon and gained cult status very soon.
Features
For a collection named after someone who was a pioneering innovator, the collection holds a fair amount of magic tricks from the past. But today, the collection is a rather simple embodiment of the 1985 timepiece. Beginning with the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase, there is a small moon phase window at the 12 o'clock marker. To further accentuate the moon phase, a few of the timepieces are also equipped with a diamond-studded bezel.Moving towards the much simpler variants of the collection, the Da Vinci Automatic offers a date window at the 6 o'clock marker. There are two case sizes available in Da Vinci Automatic series, 36 and 40mm and some of them are also offered in a diamond-studded bezel iteration.Holding the true essence of being a “Da Vinci”, the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph and Da Vinci Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph holds the heritage of the collection to their chest. The Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is a reworked version of the 1985 Da Vinci designed by Hano Burtscher. A mix of both a chronograph and perpetual calendar, the timepiece features an hour and minute sub-dial at the 12 o'clock marker with a flyback central hand, making it a chronograph. The perpetual calendar is marked by a year window between the 7 and 8 o'clock marker and the day, month, and date are fixed at the 9, 6, and 3 o'clock markers.Featuring a flying minute tourbillon, the Da Vinci Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph sits at the top of the watchmaking acumen of the brand. The timepiece features a retrograde date display between the 8 and 11 o'clock marker. On the 12 o'clock marker is the minute and hour chronograph totalizer sub-dial complemented by a flying central hand.
